The Portico Ltd

We are a Ugandan based company that is passionate about community transformation through “Agroforenergy” -Agro/forestry/Renewable energy.

It is our goal to commercially create energy from agricultural and forest by-products and waste as a means to community transformation of rural Eastern Uganda. We intend to do this through the process of Agroforenergy – the intentional inter cropping of food crops with vegetable oil seed bearing trees and using the farm produce and waste to make bio diesel, electricity through gasification and briquettes from electric plant waste. The inputs in the various stages to be sourced from rural out-growers.

Idea

We only have a longer pitch. We are already working in BoP markets and want to improve our current offering.

Community transformation is only possible if there is community participation. Communities are weary of new projects hence we started a model agro/forestry farm to create inputs for a small urban agro/energy plant. The proceeds are to be used to create an out-grower's association, a larger rural agro/energy plant and an electric generation plant.

Although most of its current operations are urban based, it sources its raw materials from a variety of low-income female and youthful earners in the community surrounding the factory. It also seeks to recruit a minimum of 500 households in the rural community as an integral source of raw materials and build their overall capacity.
