People of the Sun

People of the Sun helps artisans in Malawi to capitalise on their indigenous craftmanship skills by making the highest-quality furniture and home accessories. We have set up 6 artisan enterprises in Malawi and, through partnerships with internationally recognized designers, we are expanding the market for handmade homeware items. Our products are developed with waste or natural materials found locally. We have developed an inclusive value chain that generates social benefits to impoverished local artisans and offers innovative products to the market. Our vision is to scale up this model in Malawi and replicate it in other developing countries.

People of the Sun (PS) works to create job opportunities for marginalised artisans in Malawi. PS supports its partner artisans to develop sustainable enterprises, works with different bodies to develop a pro-poor value chain and finally serves as a marketing platform so that its partner artisans can enter national and international markets.

Revenue

We already have revenue from paying customers.
We already have revenue from paying customers.

People of the Sun started with a start-up loan (now repaid). Income from sales has allowed us to finance our operations throughout. However for PS to grow and be able to get more sales in, a one-off grant is needed alongside sales, that will allow People of the Sun to develop itself as an enterprise as well as build capacity of artisan groups on the ground, in order to be able to supply bigger volumes to retailers and reduce production lead times. Our long-term vision is to be financially sustainable through sales only.

Inclusiveness

We involve low-income groups as producers.

In our inclusive model, People of the Sun and artisans are partners and co-dependent with an aim to supply the niche high-end homeware market. Trade becomes the vehicle for poverty alleviation for the artisans as well as the income generator for all People of the Sun operations. This has allowed each of of us to play an active role in the creation of opportunity and wealth.

We involve low-income groups as producers.

Our aim is to empower artisans and improve their quality of life, which involves social, environmental and economic aspects. We currently support 750 People in Malawi (artisans and their respective families) and aim to double this in the next 2 years.
