Working with our partner at the BOP Innovation Center, we are starting with a series of two publications on scaling Inclusive Business.

Scaling up inclusive business

The first publication, ‘Scaling up inclusive business’ explores the main challenges for scaling inclusive business propositions. Various characteristics influence the nature of the notion of scale of an inclusive business. Depending on the combination of chosen scaling strategy, the business model to engage with the BoP, the sector (e.g, food, energy, water, ICT) and the country and geography of operation (e.g. rural India versus urban Kenya) the magnitude of scaling is different.

It is becoming clear that there is a ‘missing middle’ between microfinance and the regular financial instruments available to support companies developing products and services for BoP markets. This missing middle is particularly predominant in financing BoP ventures in early stages of development or in the pioneer gap: the gap in time and money between the formation of the firm and the generation of a positive cash flow.
